Contents
Amoxicillin 500 mg, clavulanic acid 125 mg
Indications/Uses
Infections of upper & lower resp tract, GUT, skin & soft tissue, bone & joint, dental eg, dentoalveolar abscess. Other infections eg, septic abortion, puerperal sepsis, intra-abdominal sepsis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Mild to moderate infections 625 mg bid or tid. Severe infections (including chronic & recurrent UTI & lower resp tract infection) 1-2 times 625 mg tid. Dental infections (eg, dentoalveolar abscess) 625 mg tid for 5-7 days.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Preferably taken at the start of meals for better absorption & to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to β-lactams eg, penicillins & cephalosporins. History of amoxicillin-clavulanate-associated jaundice/hepatic dysfunction.
Special Precautions
Serious & occasionally fatal hypersensitivity (anaphylactoid) reactions; suspected infectious mononucleosis; pseudomembranous colitis. Patients w/ evidence of hepatic dysfunction. Phenylketonuria (contains aspartame). Overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms for prolonged use. Perform periodic assessment of organ system including renal, hepatic & haematopoietic during prolonged therapy. Concomitant use w/ anticoagulants. Maintain adequate fluid intake & urinary output during high dose administration. Renal impairment. Avoid use in pregnancy. Childn <2 yr.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhoea. Mucocutaneous candidiasis; nausea, vomiting.
Drug Interactions
Reduced oestrogen reabsorption & efficacy w/ OCs. May reduce pre-dose conc of mycophenolate mofetil (oral use). Amoxicillin: Increased & prolonged blood levels w/ probenecid. Increased likelihood of allergic skin reactions w/ allopurinol. Increased INR w/ acenocoumarol or warfarin.
